FUE vs FUT Hair Transplant: Which Method Is Right for You?

FUE and FUT are the two main hair transplant techniques — but they're very different procedures with different scars, recovery times, and ideal candidates. Here's how to choose.

When patients start researching hair transplants, one of the first questions they encounter is: FUE or FUT? Both techniques can produce excellent results, but they work very differently — and the right choice depends on your specific situation, goals, and lifestyle. This guide breaks down everything you need to know to make an informed decision.

What Is FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)?

FUE is a minimally invasive technique where individual hair follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area using a tiny circular punch tool (typically 0.6–1.0mm in diameter). Each follicle is then carefully implanted into the recipient area.

Because follicles are removed individually rather than as a strip, FUE leaves no linear scar — only tiny dot-like marks that are virtually invisible even with a shaved head. Recovery is faster, and patients can return to most activities within a few days.

What Is FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)?

FUT — also called the strip method — involves surgically removing a strip of scalp from the donor area (usually the back of the head). The strip is then dissected under a microscope into individual follicular units, which are implanted into the recipient area.

FUT leaves a linear scar across the back of the scalp. With skilled closure techniques, this scar can be quite thin — but it will always be present, and it becomes visible if the hair is cut short.

The Scar Question: Why It Matters More Than You Think

For many patients, the scar is the deciding factor. If you wear your hair short — a buzz cut, a fade, or a close crop — a linear FUT scar will be visible. FUE's tiny dot scars, by contrast, are essentially undetectable even at very short lengths.

This is why FUE has become the dominant technique in modern hair restoration. The vast majority of patients — especially men under 50 — prefer the flexibility to wear their hair at any length without worrying about a visible scar.

Graft Yield: Does FUT Really Give More?

FUT can yield slightly more grafts in a single session because the strip method preserves the follicles' surrounding tissue, which some surgeons argue improves survival rates. However, advances in FUE technique have largely closed this gap. In experienced hands, FUE graft survival rates are comparable to FUT.

For patients with very advanced hair loss (Norwood scale 6–7) who need the maximum possible grafts, FUT may still be recommended — but this applies to a small minority of patients.

Recovery: FUE Wins Clearly

FUE recovery is significantly faster and more comfortable. Most FUE patients experience mild soreness for 2–3 days and can return to desk work within a week. FUT involves sutures that need to be removed after 10–14 days, and the linear incision site requires more careful management.

If you have a physically active job or lifestyle, FUE's faster recovery is a meaningful advantage.

Which Method Does ReGrow Medical Use?

At ReGrow Medical, we exclusively perform FUE hair transplants. We made this decision because we believe FUE is the superior technique for the overwhelming majority of patients — offering comparable results with less scarring, faster recovery, and greater flexibility.

Our surgeons have performed thousands of FUE procedures across our Southern California clinics, and we've refined our technique to maximize graft survival and natural-looking results.

The Bottom Line

For most patients considering a hair transplant in Los Angeles or Southern California, FUE is the right choice. It offers natural results, minimal scarring, and a faster return to normal life. FUT may still be appropriate in specific cases — but those cases are the exception, not the rule.
